Beat the Buzzer is an electronic stand alone buzzer system developed by teachers to be an entertaining and interactive way to engage students, of all ages, in a range of learning situations.
Beat the Buzzer allows the teacher to test / quiz the class in an exciting manner which has not been previously possible. Students, individually or in teams, press the buzzer, the first buzzer in, locks out the others, and that number flashes up on the Display Unit with a buzzer sound.
You will find that Beat the Buzzer will quickly grab and maintain the students' interest and attention, it will assist in the development of their knowledge, listening, thinking and reaction skills.
Beat the Buzzer can be used either in small student groups, 10 or less, each have their own buzzer; or in larger groups, with the students in teams with either a team captain or with students placing their hands on top of each other, on the buzzer.
Beat the Buzzer utilises the following components:
Buzzer Units: Ten are provided in the set, they consist of a large yellow push button switch with 2.5 metres of retractable cable inside the buzzer unit. They connect to the Display Unit using a simple modem connector.
Display Unit is composed of the following:
- Yellow numbers 0 to 9 - student/team number
- Small red LED - student/team score (max. 29)
- Large red LED - shows student/team in first
- Reset Button (*) - pressed before each question
- Scoring buttons (-) and (+) - to keep a running score
- Socket to connect the 9 volt adaptor.
Cable Extension Unit By using the connector (in the back of this unit), the distance the student can be from the Display Unit can be increased by another 2.5m.
Quiz Question CD Over 1000 questions on a range of topics, to supplement your 'relevant' questions, in MS word so ready for cutting/pasting.

Here a few tips you might find helpful:
- Make sure you have plenty of questions ready, as you will go through them very quickly!
- Beat the Buzzer can be used individually or in teams (all with a hand above the buzzer).
- With the little kids; it's amazing how it helps them to learn to think and react 'quickly'.
- It's not always the 'smartest' kids who do the best, so this gives other kids in the class a chance to shine a bit. For those times when someone is just too quick, hands on their head or sitting on them, slows them down a bit.
- Great for checking things like multiplication tables, spelling lists etc.
- You can see what they have learnt after a topic/unit, or even find out what they know before you start a topic/unit (great as a before and after type check).
- Works well with open book type questions, either individually or in groups, ask the questions, and by them going through the information enough times, they're guaranteed to learn something.
- The students love being the 'Quiz Master' too - get the students / groups to make up a set of questions each, in class or for homework, from say their notes or text they are reading etc.
- Works well with the big kids before those critical exams, it can even be fun; but still cements those important facts they have to know.
- Use regularly, with whatever information you are dealing with, and the kids are able to get their own measure on how they are improving.
- Great for those sport days that are 'rained out'; or those days when you're stuck baby sitting a class when their teacher is away.
- Great for the staff (or P&C) to use for trivia type events.
